Xan's Colom : Savannah's Breaks
Posted by Anonymous on 2007/7/1 12:49:46 (526 reads)

+startlog: 1600, calypso standard.
+teamname: "Savannah's Breaks".
+teammembers: Savannah; Goethe Link; Tanglewire; Sparks.

"Quiet, quiet," Savannah whispered to the rest of her team. She was hiding with her back to a vertical boulder about one and a half times as tall as her. Tanglewire was somewhere off to her left, out of her field of view. Sparks was crouching behind a tree, with her pistol out. She'd upgraded recently, and the True Faith nestled in her grip shone like new.

The fourth member of this expedition was about three hundred metres ahead of them, looking for their target. They were here on a tip - Savannah had received info from a scout that had died horribly out here. Tucked away deep in this forest was a trio of atrox marauders. Two were comatose, and the third was dying.

Goethe Link was the stealthiest hunter that Savannah could raise in a hurry. He was also the fastest, so had the best chance of not dying.

"Guys..." Goethe whispered, his words echoed through the team channel.

"Go ahead." Savannah replied to him.

"Three atrox marauders. Alive and healthy." His voice sounded disappointed.

"Damnit." Savannah sighed.

"They noticed me!"

"Run!" She shouted down the link.

"I've got Goethe on radar." Tangle said. He began to concentrate, starting to ready his pyrotropic skills.

"Our three marauders are on his tail," Sparks cut in, "all ready?"

"Always." Savannah grinned, and raised her Breer.

In unison, the three hunters stepped out of cover. Tangle's vision blurred with fire, and the lead atrox's head was wreathed in flame. In the time it took the rampaging atrox to cover the intervening ground, Sparks had squeezed off four shots. Savannah, standing further back, managed five. Goethe sped past the three of them, obviously intent on putting as much ground between him and the three healthy, enraged atrox intent on killing him.

One of the three peeled off and took a bite out of Sparks. Her scream was cut short, and her body slumped to the floor. Tanglewire roasted the lead atrox with another blast of fire before being cut down, too.

Savannah bit her lip, and stared oblivion in the face, unloading shot after shot of burning laser-light into the lead atrox's skull.

Goethe fell to a pair of berserk atrax that had been attracted by the commotion.

Savannah was the last one to go: she went down shouting imprecations at the three atrox. The others were waiting for her at revival.

"I'm going to kill him," said Savannah, as calmly as six inches of snow, "then I'm going to come down here, get him, and kill him again. Wait here. Make sure he doesn't get away."

Tanglewire and Sparks exchanged glances, and grinned. This was Savannah's rage talking, and that was always entertaining to witness, if not enjoyable to suffer from. Goethe chuckled, and busied himself with a repair terminal, bringing his armour back up to full strength.

Savannah had received her information from a self-styled scout called Paul Maker. Savannah found him, talking and joking with a group of his friends. Without a word or even an expression, she silently stepped up behind him, and put him in an armlock. His friends did nothing as she dragged him away, probably all assuming that it was his lucky day.

She kicked his legs out from under him and dragged him bodily to the top of the Exchange. Unceremoniously, she ran towards the edge and pitched him off the roof. When the poor soul blinked back into being at the revival terminal, he found himself surrounded, with the grinning faces of Tanglewire and Sparks looking down at him. Forty-five seconds later, Savannah burst back through the door, knife in hand.

"You don't mess with us."
